How it works

How the payment is calculated

The calculator assumes equal installments (annuity): you pay the same amount every month, but its makeup changes. At first most of the payment is interest, and with every payment a larger part repays principal. Interest accrues monthly on the remaining principal at the nominal annual rate divided by 12.

What overpaying does

An overpayment goes entirely to principal while the payment stays the same. The loan ends sooner and interest accrues on a smaller balance. The earlier you start, the bigger the effect. Check your loan agreement for any conditions or fees on overpayments.

What the calculator leaves out

Fees, insurance, other costs and variable interest rates (for example ones based on WIBOR). To compare offers with extra costs, use the APR calculator.
